Recently graduated from the Royal Academy of Music Jazz course, saxophonist and guitarist Harry Greene is rapidly making a name for himself on the scene in London and beyond, appearing regularly at Ronnie Scott’s, Pizza Express and recently at the Royal Albert Hall as part of the Ronnie Scott’s at 60 Gala.

An in-demand sideman both live and in the studio, Harry has performed with a wide range of different groups including the London City Big Band, NYJO and Sax Appeal. He has also performed alongside legendary jazz musicians Dave Holland and Chris Potter as part of the Royal Academy of Music Big Band. Internationally, he’s performed as a guest artist at the “Villars Vanguard” Jazz Club in Switzerland as well as numerous festival dates with acclaimed Afrobeat ensemble Afrik Bawantu. Harry has also led his own bands at venues including the 606 Club and Cambridge Jazz Festival, and appears annually at the London Jazz Festival courtesy of JBGB management.

Outside the world of jazz, Harry has performed with Cory Wong, Mica Paris and Marva King (ex-Prince + NPG member) and at the age of 17, he MD'd a 10-piece band fronted by ex-Drifters vocalist Maurice Cannon. Harry is saxophonist and arranger for the Tom Seals Band, who recently topped the blues charts and are continuing to enjoy appearances at Ronnie Scott's, on Sky TV and at  festivals such as Blenheim Palace. Harry and the Band did a recent video collaboration with legendary comedian Matt Lucas.

Aside from Harry's performing career he is also an in-demand composer and arranger. In the world of television he has written several Library Music albums in genres ranging from Film Noir to Afrobeat through to Funk and Big Band, for the most part playing all instruments. Harry also co-wrote/produced the debut album by The Ashton Jones Project, “Toast." Released to critical acclaim in September 2019, the album has gained well over half a million online streams online, with Vanguard Magazine writing "it's as if Earth Wind and Fire had worked with Stevie Wonder and got Prince in for a guest-spot."

Harry is a qualified educator, having led courses at the prestigious Aldeburgh Young Musicians, a UK centre for musical excellence.

Harry formed this Trio in late 2018, comprising of fellow Royal Academy London-based musicians Matt Carter (Organ) Oren Mcloughlin (Drums) and Harry playing both saxophone and guitar.

With an eclectic set featuring their own originals and re-worked standards, the band draws on a wide range of influences from Seamus Blake and John Schofield to Stevie Wonder and traditional Gospel Music.

A 10-piece ensemble fusing traditional Ghanaian rhythms with Afrobeat and Funk music, Afrik Bawantu is led by percussionist/vocalist Afla Sackey, and features Harry on Baritone and Tenor Saxes.

The band have finished a week-long session ahead of the release of a new album...watch this space for further news! And to hear us in action head over to the music page.

"The stunningly international 10-piece band take traditional Ghanaian music and scorching Afro-beat grooves and give them a funky fusion twist."

"Afrik Bawantu blends vibrant African percussions to a funky horn section, spreading their Afro Funk energy to everyone in the audience."

Collectively, they can account for performing with many prolific figures on the British jazz scene. This includes performances with Liane Carroll, Mornington Lockett and Alan Barnes, as well as Chris Potter and Dave Holland through their time at the Royal Academy of Music.

As a trio, they draw on a wide range of range of influences from Seamus Blake and John Schofield to Stevie Wonder and traditional gospel music.

“Harry's tenor framed the song; warm, deliberate and confident.”

Workshop education

I have co-led week-long residencies at Aldeburgh Young Musicians, a musical Centre of Excellence at Snape Maltings. These have involved coaching large groups of mixed age and ability pupils, focusing on developing their improvisational and ensemble playing skills. These courses have culminated in hour-long performances, where the students have performed material from memory they have composed themselves throughout the week.

“Harry Greene is an outstanding musician, collaborator and educator. His creative approach to music making has led to him being a consistent top choice when selecting musicians to work with our Aldeburgh Young Musicians. As an alumnus of Aldeburgh Young Musicians, when he returns now as a professional to work alongside the aspiring young musicians, they find him approachable, inspirational and fun.”

“Harry is a rare example of someone who possesses exceptional talent and musicality as well as a warm and friendly personality with a strong commitment to his work.”

Stacey Kurtz Campkin - Head of Aldeburgh Young Musicians

“Everyone has had the time of their lives this week, with almost everyone saying it's the best musical experience they've ever had….they have really shown us the potential we all have!”

Connor Hargreaves – AYM student

“Harry’s enthusiasm is infectious…he’ll always go the extra mile. There is a good reason why he is creating quite a stir in the music business.”
